School Wellness Council

According to information we reviewed from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, we learned that childhood obesity is one of the most serious health epidemics facing America today. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 16% of all children and teens in the US are overweight. Childhood obesity is leading to a range of health problems in our youth that previously weren't generally seen until adulthood, including high blood pressure, type II diabetes, and elevated blood cholesterol levels.

We believe we have a responsibility to improve the health and well-being of our children. Experience shows that schools can be powerful places to initiate behavioral and environmental changes for students and staff. To make our school environment healthier, our school formed a School Wellness Council.  In addition, the SWC reviews all board policies and practices pertaining to health and wellness in our schools.  The SWC is concerned with all aspects of health and wellness such as the management of life threatening allergies, diabetes, safety and security of food served in our schools, maximizing instructional time, as well as a host of factors outlined in the Alliance for a Healthier Generation's Healthy Schools Program.

The purpose of the council is to bring together representatives from the school community who can help address issues facing the health and well-being of our children.

We have provided this special area on our website as a resource to our school community.  The School Wellness Council will post information about wellness and nutrition as well as recommendations for making our schools a healthier environment for our students, families, and staff.

Finally, the Tabernacle School District has adopted the Alliance for a Healthier Generation's Healthy Schools Program.  The SWC  uses the Healthy Schools Program's Self Assessment Guide for determining the status of our efforts to improve health and wellness in our schools.

We welcome you to return to often for updates to the activities of our SWC in our schools.
